Picture draws us into a world of contemplation around the current state of the world. It’s a deeply human project, with dashes of character, humour, colour and optimism, all woven into a well-rounded four-track collection.
The project begins with The Elephant, and presents as a kind of unfiltered acoustic and keys fusion of slightly off-rhythm realness. Pearl’s voice is equally unedited, unaffected and honest, and this suits these long-form musings, which ultimately take a satirical look at the things we choose not to notice in life.
With stripped-back horn solos and a playful aura countering the implied depth of the Picture EP, Pearl introduces a sense of ambition and artistic freedom combined with this release. Drift Away is instantly more ambient and evocative, performatively soulful and conceptually deep, and the contrast works well to recapture any wandering minds.
Here Pearl’s clear influence from the likes of Kate Bush emerges, but the EP in full is impressively eclectic, and as mentioned, it holds true to a genuine sense of creativity that is from the heart and unafraid to be authentic.
