Indie electronic artist WAVESTART captures a colourful, light and immersive aura, with the multi-layered charm and melodies of about u.
From the 2026 album wave, about u leads with a classic eighties bassline and rhythm, and an enchanting balance of distorted and delicate synths and keys – long-form riffs meandering as waves of unpredictable but looping melody.
All the while, fragments of voice add further to this cinematic, enchanting core, and then we get the vocal melody – almost a brief interlude – declaring a loving connection, with an inspiring resolve of ‘be who you are’ that resounds and lingers in the mind.
Stylistically influenced by the likes of George Clanton, Vegyn and Yung Lean, there’s ultimately a kind of freedom and fluidity to the WAVESTART approach to music, and this pours through in swathes for the album wave.
about u is one of the most recognisable tracks on the project, for both its echoing lyrical sentiments, and the addictive nature of the frontline synth riff that’s naturally an earworm. We move from unexpected to satisfying in no time at all, and the song leaves you keen to hit replay; more than a few times over.
