London-based independent creative The Wrong Man (fronted by Jonathan Gibbon), sets a calming vibe, alongside juxtaposed intrigue from the imagery and poetry, for the beautifully moving Sleeping Pills.
Something like the songwriting and performance style of Elbow in a way, there’s a softness and subtle passion to Sleeping Pills – the piano and the vocal serenity, the accessibility and the careful but clear switch from hopeful to uncertain melodies and chords, all creates a sense of real meaning and honesty.
It’s catchy but also interesting, not conjuring up memories of other songs, and the subject matter is intriguing – perhaps relatable, countering darkness and light both stylistically and lyrically. Sleeping Pills is aptly rather addictive, a slightly heart-breaking listen, but it’s also light enough to not let that weight overpower every time you hit play. The balance works well.
