Hip Hop has long since been in need of a little re-working, some creative reinvention – yet not at the cost of clever bars or intention (as has been the case in many contemporary offerings). Enter Oluse, an artist who couldn’t care less what the genre expects musically, but who rolls with the punches in his own creatively free and surprisingly captivating manner.
This latest release is all of this. It’s hip hop – for sure – the beat and the flow outline the best parts of the genre. But, from the distortion and intensity of the first few seconds, you know you’re in for a ride unlike much else around. That expressive artistry continues throughout, a striking and unsettling yet strangely likable beat backs up a versatile and consistently evolving performance and lyrical outpouring.
Oluse makes certain to leave his mark, with quiet confidence and expressive phrasing. A single listen leaves the whole thing calling out to you for a re-play. A second visit lets the intricacies and reflections of the lyricism, the clever word play, all connect on an impressive level. It will be interesting to hear where else the music takes him throughout his latest EP Thorium. A refreshing display of intentional and smart modern rap.
