Returning to the raw essentials of heartfelt songwriting, Maypo Deluxe lets the nuance and realism of his voice and lyricism shine naturally, for the acoustic guitar-led fireside charm and radical acceptance of Living Out Loud.
Quite possibly my favourite song from Maypo Deluxe in quite a while, Living Out Loud feels bold and beautiful in its simplicity and vulnerability. From the outset, the lyrics read like a diary entry, and the hook provides a subtle but striking lift and resolve that cries out to connect and uplift.
The whole thing is incredibly poetic, but also poignant and genuine – something written from a place of real experience and uncertainty, of searching for something better, someone to share life with or to feel understood by. We move from struggle to satisfaction, to ideas like embracing the pain and finding a way to ‘breathe once again’.
The song is hopeful, but not without a journey, and for the final quarter, ‘all of these things will pass’ softly repeats and with sublime dignity, inspiring a belief in the temporary nature of everything, and reminding us, by way of these modest country twangs and the crisp yet warm guitar and vocal pairing, that things will be ok.
