LA creative Tommy Simpson adopts an enthralling, unsettling and unignorable artistic persona, as the artistic depth and sonically fierce waves of Macro/micro pour through, for the 11 original tracks of an album poignantly titled A.fter I.ntelligence.
Self-defined as creating out of a fascination for the connection between inner and outer space, Macro/micro is an experimental electronic project, which blends profound introspection with philosophical musings on artificial intelligence, human evolution, and the complex realm of consciousness.
As we commit to the moment, Artificial Narrow Intelligence (‘We Can Always Just Shut it Off’), blends a brief but relatable title with an industrial to sci-fi-soaked intensity and movement that’s enthralling. Then for Artificial Super Intelligence afterwards, despite these titles being something of a mouthful, the experience is both industrial and delicate – intense and melodic, suddenly awakening, eye-opening, and both disconcerting and comforting in equal parts.
Built around live instruments and programmed aspects alike, this project represents the true interconnectedness of seemingly opposed realms, and with haunting whispers of voice and ideas scattered throughout the confines of the album, there’s something completely captivating about the full collection – an audio movie of sorts, provocative and fresh, dark and devilish but impressive; honest and completely fantastical all at once.
Tommy Simpson’s background includes working as an audio engineer for the mighty Trent Reznor, and this tells you a fair bit about his ability and nuance in the arts, but A.fter I/ntelligence tells you far more.
