Artist and songwriter Jesca Hoop collaborates for the fifth time with Elia Petridis of Filmatics, to offer up this latest and truly stunning, conceptually thoughtful and provocative new single and video Red White and Black.
Presenting a single-shot film, the release reaches out in an instant for your attention and interest, and outright refuses to let go until it’s all over and done with.
This is honestly my introduction to both Filmatics and Jesca Hoop, and what a starting point. There’s a certain caliber of artistry represented here that extends skyward without limits. The music is beautiful, melancholic yet peaceful, calm yet subtly manic – rhythmically engaging and somewhat relentless as the lyricism pours through.
Poetry and societal or political relevance intertwine in again subtle manners that slowly but surely paint a clear and striking picture before you. Meanwhile, oppression and struggle are represented visually by various characters locked in fist fights that edge their way around the building. Jesca herself progresses from a mere witness to being involved, acting on behalf of injustice – the movement towards this moment ties in well with the slowly but surely rising energy and gathering intensity of the song.
Red White and Black is a powerful work of art, there’s no doubt about it. There’s certainly a simplicity you can enjoy, if you choose to – beautifully intriguing lyrics, a simple and rather addictive melody line, a series of action clips. But then, on the other hand, there’s plenty more at work, and the more closely you pay attention – the sooner the conversation gets underway. Absolutely worth discovering and I look forward to the album from Jesca Hoop later this year.
