Devin Kennedy is an artist whose sound is impossible to predict from simply browsing through his online presence (which is a great thing, in my opinion). His image to me seems far less squeaky clean or smartly cut than the average dance-pop dreamer tends to be – perhaps it’s the guitar, the emotional expressions or the cool and calm demeanor. This alternative angle also runs throughout his music, just subtly, and it’s something you really come to appreciate and find quite refreshing within his work.
Bad Habit is a stylishly crafted electronic track, RnB-like in melody, EDM-like in the way the layers and synths work to give the whole thing a sense of character. The first time you hear the piece it feels fit to share the stages with many of the big hits of recent years, the second time you hear it though – that progression, those notes, the effects and finish, and indeed Kennedy’s leading vocal tone and performance style – all of this is now immediately familiar and recognisable now for what it is. Bad Habit has character, but it also has the all-important professional and relevant shine that’s likely to see it make waves among music fans far and wide.
Instrumentally this track has so many strengths, the approach meets the demands of today’s world, the details fit the mold, yet in among this is a notably creative set-up – begin with delicacy and space, evolving to present a warm and memorable soundscape, followed soon afterwards by a brilliantly rhythmic and easily recognisable instrumental hook. The song’s melody progresses in a similarly characterful way. Devin Kennedy offers a strong balance between relevancy and originality. Bad Habit it as an easy hit, fusing genres and offering the comfort of something that flows but that also sticks to its own sense of creativity.
