Emerging from the depths of a mind immersed in dreams of art and music as an escape from the darkness of reality – DADPEH is a doctor by trade, but has utilised modern production tools to dive into the creative expression of music and songwriting, which has long since provided solace and healing from hardship.
Beginning with its title track, we’re embraced by a long-form emo pop-rock vocal thread and a kind of neo-classical rock set-up that’s emotionally loaded.
Later on, the project spins a few unexpected webs of redirection, with Drop It in particular adding a twist of electronic glitch-hop that’s brilliantly hypnotic and well-placed as a wholly instrumental arrangement. Before this, however, Greed further explores the shadow of scarcity and the opposing realm of excess that’s only truly visible from the clutches of struggle and desperation.
The instrumental track after these two seems perfectly catered to allowing the listener time to reflect, but also, the euphoric final quarter of Greed is a fully-loaded synth and rhythm downpour that’s intoxicating, and on that note, this entire EP is cleverly well-connected as a complete artistic outburst.
Bringing the four-track EP to a finish, Watching shadows grow adds a dash of hip hop vocal-play to a timeless floor-filler backdrop that’s melodic and moody in equal parts. This dance-rap final chapter is catchy, mainstream-ready in its structure and satisfying simplicity, and it draws upon nostalgia and those crisp, contemporary design tools alike, to build something instantly catchy, enjoyable, and still thought provoking for its fearless diary-style poetry and imagery.
By his own admission, DADPEH has carved these tracks out of a sheer need to escape and release himself from the weight of a hard life. “Not because pain is romantic, but because when you’ve lived it, silence is no longer an option.”
The project is complex, and fiercely eclectic, but the ideas and emotions resound and reach out, from the boldness of I’m the villain again, its honesty in crying out for help, through the creative highs and lows of a versatile electronic rock and neo-classical playlist. The openness is welcomed, and the passion is clear and concise.
“I’ve been screaming on the inside without making a sound, but it came out wrong, and I’m the villain again.”
