Working through the heartbreak of life, growing older and experiencing disappointment, heartbreak, the need to heal, and ultimately rediscovering your confidence in chasing your own dreams once again.
Pair these deeply human intentions with great vocals – raspy and intimate, expressive and impassioned – alongside an acoustic guitar groove and melodies that feel timeless in their comfort and embrace. Chris Arthur provides a perfect chemistry of sorts, with the 10 original songs of his album Underneath The Scar.
Beginning with the rather beautiful All That Glitters Isn’t Gold, we’re introduced to a sound that falls somewhere between the likes of Goo Goo Dolls, Bruce Springsteen, and Noah Kahan. Chris Arthur employs acoustic to full band layers to captivate, with a choir-led interlude adding further emotional depth to the song’s latter half. Remember to Forget follows on with a similar style, but fingerpicked guitar and first-person songwriting draws you in a little closer.
It’s a gorgeous start, and the remaining project is equally impactful and enjoyable. These songs were born out of genuine turmoil, the pain of loss and grief, and the need to dust yourself off and start over. It’s melancholic but hopeful, about feeling broken but believing in better, and that makes these songs feel like they cry with you at the same time as inspiring and motivating you to carry on.
