Following the release of his latest EP Graduation: The American Dream, we dig into the creative process and inspiration behind artist and NFT maker LUI’s workflow, as well as his plans for the future, how he’s built such an impressive following, and plenty more. Here’s the conversation in full.
Hey LUI, a real pleasure to chat, thanks for the interview – how are things with you lately?
Blessed to be here to be honest.
You’re a musician and NFT creator – how do you balance the two creative disciplines, and how do they, if at all, intertwine?
And a masters student… I think a key is surrounding yourself with love, doing the things you love, with the people that love you.
Let’s talk about Graduation: The American Dream – what inspired you to make this project, and what does it represent for you as an artist?
This project was inspired by our perspective of the ‘American dream’ – the reason why I am here today and the reason why I keep on going.
Musically your sound is distinctly eclectic – where do you start as a musician, what do you play, and what comes first out of melody, concept and groove?
My main specialty is vocals and songwriting. I have many approaches and it really depends on my mood at the moment. My main approach is simple, by catching a vibe of the sound in front of me then I can proceed to creating my own vibe, intentions, and groove. The Concept and melody usually is structured in the beginning of the process but may shift or may even be turned around – that’s the beauty about art, you can go anywhere.
Do you consider yourself a rapper or all-round performer, and who would you say was your biggest influence in carving out this style?
I’m just a musician. I often call myself an artist. (some may call me a rapper because my style is hip hop influenced but I also sing). Life experience is my biggest influence.
How did you come to write the bars of Rich Made, and what do you hope people take away form this track?
One of my favorite tracks on the EP. Rich Made because this feels destined. I am not even talking about just financially. I’m talking all aspects of growth within my inner self, spiritually, and my environment; that includes financially too.
In what ways did growing up in Peru impact your perspective and drive as an artist?
When you have a 3rd world perspective you see life differently and really appreciate the small things we perceive in life.
“When you come from nothing, change means the whole world.”
What’s been the most impactful thing you’ve learned from studying music marketing?
Oof, studying music marketing really gives a broad view into the business side and standards – not just business in general but what it could potentially mean to establish a music business.
You’ve amassed an impressive following on social media – what have been the main tools you’ve used to reach a broader audience, and what do you think it is about your sound and work that connects with so many people?
It’s all about learning. It took me 5 years to have the following and support I have today. I think a key is just getting better at what you do, whether it’s musically, or more personal – people are attracted to growth, and your style… your vibes attract your tribe. Keep showing up!
How important is the video aspect of your artistry, and your overall image as a creative?
It’s super important for me not just as an artist and creator myself but as an art lover. I want to project what I want to see and this ain’t for the basics.
Will you be performing live much in the coming months, and if so, what can fans expect from that?
I got booked for one of the biggest festivals in New Jersey, Urban Renaissance 8 – will take place Nov 12th in New jersey. We will be doing a greet and meet, signing autographs, and of course you’re going to see LUI in action.
Given your extensive repertoire, how do you maintain the motivation and work ethic to keep creating and creating?
Life is a balance for me.
“Write down everything you love & do it all! Do it with intention, and most importantly do it with love. All our actions & thoughts produce a domino affect. Who we want to be reflects who we are. Life is long fam & we might as well make the best out of it.”
What’s your greatest ambition right now?
I just entered my masters – so definitely conquering that while also growing and managing my music career.
