An instantly distinct melody captures attention from the outset, as British-born composer and musician Peter Dulborough introduces the refreshingly recognisable, unique nuance and journey of William.
Leading with piano melodies that feel both snappy and evocative, The Dream sets us off on a venture designed to pay tribute to our protagonist’s grandfather William. It’s emotional, but the instrumental space lets that become a feeling defined by each listener. For me, The Dream becomes something of a celebration in the end, fusing aspects of folk, jazz and classical in a subtle way, with an earworm at the forefront, and even something a little cinematic or Eminem-like at the start. That’s a personal reaction, of course, but it seems to suit the versatility of William quite well, in my view.
The project continues to branch out stylistically, with a pop-rock vocal and groove elevating the title-track William, and acoustic finger-picking and female vocals adding alt-folk brightness and wonder, for Afar. Then to finish, we return to the movie-like horns and keys of the opener, as Stefano a conversation wraps things up with mystique and charm; an instrumental outro that perfectly bookends this generational tribute.
