The UK’s own Kath Moskvina, an indie-rock musician with a twist of electronic and cinematic design to her sound, stands tall on the strength of contemplative and grunge-like integrity and depth, throughout the engaging and impressively unique single Outsider.
On the one hand, Outsider presents listeners with a strong groove, distorted and nostalgically fuzzy, and juxtaposes this with the delicacy and reverb-kissed distance of the leading voice. A familiar and fitting alternative sound, with simple melodies and perhaps ties to the likes of both Placebo and The Cranberries. On the other hand, however, the single delivers a complex and unpredictable journey – one of changing stages, changing tunes, and somewhat vast and immersive production.
In short, Kath Moskvina, the guitarist, singer, songwriter and producer behind every aspect of this sound, is an artist creating outside of the box. As such, the anthemic but unexpected twists and turns of Outsider, along with the conceptual intrigue of the lyrics, make it a rather perfectly-titled song.
Openly inspired by the likes of Muse, Tom Morello, and Depeche Mode, Moskvina’s sound is noticeably based around the strength of an idea and the creative expression of both the vocal and design traits. Her debut album is expected this season, and it will no doubt be a project loaded with equally interesting and enjoyable alternative tracks. One to look out for.
