Stunning vocals, thick with personality, meander stylishly through this alternative Americana single. Backed up by a simple, spacious soundscape, and a gentle marching rhythm with trip-hop tendencies – the whole thing consistently progresses from good, to great, to brilliant.
Leading with a sort of Coal War-esque sense of movement, there’s also a poetic overtone that bewilders initially, and grows more intriguing the further along you move – and indeed with each re-visit.
At around the half-way mark, the melody rises, the vocals more than meet the challenge, and a few additional details help signify this change or reveal and resolve in the story-line.
Come Home explores precisely what the title implies – many of us have lost our sense of home, and with it, perhaps our sense of self. The more intently you listen, the more strongly the ideas connect and even enlighten.
In terms of the musicality, and for lack of a more appropriate word, it’s a cool sounding song – minimalist but striking, engaging and quite addictive in rhythm, melody and poetic concept. And all of this comes with a refreshingly strange, bizarrely captivating and cleverly memorable video.
Really nicely done – I’m a fan, can’t wait to hear more.
