Producer and artist EL Mo3 recently released his energetic call to sobriety, the powerful alternative dance track that is Gasmask. We caught an interview with him to find out more about what led him to this point. Here’s how it went.

Hey – thanks for the chat! Congrats on the release of Gasmask. What’s it like being a sober DJ and producer in 2019?
Tough. As a DJ I am surrounded by an assortment of free drugs and alcohol. I’ve formed healthy habits to counter the wanting to partake. As an example I surround myself with mostly sober friends.
What prompted you to want to inspire music fans to stay clean and let the music alone take them to higher plains?
Music for me is very special. I myself had a struggle with alcoholism. The music made me feel good – at a time when I was down, it brought me up. I wanted to give that feeling to other people.
Gasmask is an incredibly creative and original new track – how do you get started with a piece like this, and how do you know when it’s done and ready to be shared?
Thank you!! For me I first start with a certain sound or an idea of how I want the listeners to react. In Gasmask’s case I wanted that first emotion to be a happy rage. So I found a kind of festival sounding loop which I liked because it’s hardcore. At the end of the song you hear a woman’s voice going ah ooo ah ooo – I love deadmau5 and he incorporates endings that let you sit with what you just heard for a second. Kind of like once the storm has cleared.
How did you come to choose the name EL Mo3?
So a close friend actually helped me pick that name. In Spanish El Mo3 translates to The Mo3. My name is Morgan and I most people call me Mo. I thought why not put a 3 on the end.
What are your plans creatively over the coming months?
Produce more tracks. Share my sober lifestyle to anyone who will listen. Kind of just go with the state I am currently in.
What are the main factors required in order for a contemporary producer to make waves within the scene?
I think having a story to tell is what it’s all about. When people can relate to you, I think that makes a big difference, you know. Work ethic is very important though because content is what gets me new listeners, new fans – it’s an identity.
What are your hopes for the future as an artist?
I would love to be someone whom people can look to in a time of need. Giving to others through music is extraordinary.
