Tohi’s single OUT THE BOX creatively brings together the anthem-like rhythm and hook-style of a contemporary hip hop hit, with a notably world-inspired and somewhat tribal backdrop. All of this gives off a modern yet organically rooted vibe, easily recognisable – conceptually and in terms of the vocal pace and that hook melody.
The whole thing offers a certain simplicity that lets each layer of individuality shine well. The melodic strings in the backdrop add a hint of something oriental, the beat holds close to an industrial trip hop vibe, and meanwhile – the vocals present a back and forth set-up that works subtly but surely towards keeping you involved and interested right the way through.
The more you hear of this track, the more likable it becomes. There’s a whole host of melody floating around in the outer edges – strings and dashes of organic colour and musicality; effectively raising the song up higher than the vast majority of its peers. There’s a musical freedom to it, a creative expression at its core that’s been confidently united with the entrancing rhythms of modern alternative pop and hip hop. For all of these reasons it works, it introduces character and musicianship in equal parts, and it makes sure you walk away with that key line running through your mind.
