Let’s start this off with a big thank you to Thomas Resurrection for keeping the gravel and grit of soulful blues-rock alive. DIRTY is one of a few recent releases that present his sound in a memorable yet partly nostalgic manner.
The leading voice has a definite hint of character about it, a certain heavy-metal depth that almost merges into a growl at certain points. The songwriting style has something a little different about it to, this track is not structured or set-up as heavily or as intensely as the initial sound might imply. On occasion there’s a classic rock and roll feel, then there are moments of space and indie-rock rhythm, then there’s this infectious blues-rock riff that drives the soundscape in between vocals. There’s a lot about this that genuinely refreshes, the authentic sound is there, but style-wise Thomas Resurrection is something of its own. You get a sense towards the end of DIRTY that a live show is where things would really find their feet.
After the primary hit of the music and the general sound, the lyrics are the next thing to sink in. There’s a personal touch to this story line, including the direct addressing of a significant other. The verse lines are short and somewhat vague, but this works well as it paves the way to the keep on digging line – a moment that will undoubtedly bring listeners together in their shared understanding of the sentiment. You make songs like this your own, fragments of ideas connect and then guitar solos and energy fill the space and support that connection – holding you close until the end. A definite recommend with a nice level of individuality.
Other releases worth a listen include Reach, a notably emotional and equally personal moment of expression that immediately sounds like Thomas Resurrection once you’re familiar with the approach. There are several distinctive threads throughout that let you know exactly who you’re listening to. Hopefully there’s plenty more to come.
