Winter is Coming…
The Music Industry Continues to Rage War Against Itself, But in the Midst of Legal Fights & Billionaires Playing Chess with Streaming Platforms: Who Really Runs Things?
The short answer is, YOU.
There is no music industry without musicians and music fans. Or if there is, let’s leave it to the AI algorithms, and we’ll call the real music world something else – something other than an industry.
This past month has had a multitude of big news items emerge regarding Spotify, AI, K-Pop and streaming economics. But if I’m honest, none of that is of interest. What I’ve really noticed this past month is how amazing some of the new music has been from indie artists pushing the boat out by themselves. Creating from the heart, without fear, and without the need to gain approval from some heavy-pocketed industry big-wig.
There is always an upside, and it’s becoming all the more clear lately. The new punk ethos is to realise that not being able to scratch the surface of the mainstream algorithm can be a good thing – there is so much more to find, so many listeners, fans, viewers, musicians, who genuinely don’t give a damn what AI music is doing. Let’s call a spade a spade – AI is automated code. Music is Music.
To be clear, the tools we use for production are all much of a muchness now, but the basic building blocks remain – the human touch is needed if you really want to feel something, and that’s what the underground continues to celebrate and seek out.

To The Real Music Champions…
You guys are the reason music connects so deeply. Whether it’s euphoric dance tracks or guitar solos, folk fiddles and poetry, rough vocals or sublimely smooth ones, hard bars or heavy distortion – something about using music to communicate complex thoughts, feelings and ideas is universally compelling, and I don’t think that will ever change.
Keep doing what you do, and as a music fan, keep listening, streaming the tracks, following the indie artists who clearly love to make music, and turn your ears away from regurgitated copycat slop.
