Thamatic - Spacesuit - Stereo Stickman

Thamatic Spacesuit

-

As they gear themselves up ready for the release of their upcoming album The Final Album, Thamatic come through with a single and video that speaks volumes on behalf of their creative and conceptual direction right now.

Injecting equal parts melody and electronic grit, Spacesuit is a surprisingly unique and entrancing new track that effectively creates and breaks its own rules as it moves along.

Melody is crucial here, and Thamatic apply just the right level of it throughout – in the vocal, in the riffs. Meanwhile, this particular downpour of synths and effects builds a brilliantly space-like yet simultaneously soulful and emotional backdrop – allowing the song to achieve the rare quality of being all at once inspired by sci-fi yet organic enough to connect on a deeper, more intimate level.

As things build, the beat and the music really start to create waves – the EDM core shines brightly and almost over-powers the vocal during the latter half. Then it falls away, and that voice is laid all but bare before you – a moment that lights up the lyrics, and paves the way well for the final seductive drop back to the rhythm and warmth of the full piece.

Having worked with Sean O’Keefe very recently – producer for Fall Out Boy, Plain White T’s and Ed Sheeran – Thamatic have categorically found their footing with electronic music. Spacesuit – along with the upcoming video and single for The Park Ridge – makes for the perfect introduction to that.

This is a powerful and indeed beautiful new song, one that does far more than offer an electronic hit inspired by or influenced by anything in particular. Sure, there are hints of Daft Punk and other big names from times past, but this feels genuinely like its own thing – its own beast, with its own intentions.

For all of these reasons, this is easily a track you can let play on repeat, at volume, and not grow tired of its embrace. I look forward to the album.
