The UK’s own Yoji blends old-school DnB vibes with blissfully soulful, meandering vocals, for a sound that’s instantly distinct, uplifting, and comfortingly nostalgic.
Liberosis (Set Yourself Free) is everything its title implies – an empowering anthem, with dreamy melodies and production that further the embrace and escapism or freedom of the overall sound.
We begin by following this classic but light DnB production and groove, later guided by Yoji’s divine long-form vocals, as we climb towards the simple and catchy resolve of a well-crafted hook.
The added pleasure of Liberosis (Set Yourself Free) is just how satisfying and addictive the hook really is. It’s a catchy moment, celebratory and enjoyable, but it’s also far from intrusive or overbearing – as many pop hooks tend to be lately.
The subtlety of the track is a huge part of its charm, along with that blending of old school and contemporary qualities, and the impressive and distinct, soulful, genuine and unfiltered vocals of Yoji.
An easy favourite from this past week and a great introduction to the music of Yoji.
