Possibly a personal favourite from Witz so far, Heartbeat Faster is a brilliantly smooth and nineties-soaked pop-EDM offering, which drives with a mellow synth progression and a distant, subtly soulful vocal.
The build-up is beautiful here, the track takes its time to envelop the listener, making for a fine accompaniment to a commute or a moment of pure escapism from the noise of the world. At the same time, there’s a thoughtful concept at work, the singer is reflecting on past relationship turmoil while showcasing a deep-rooted concern for the future. The very idea of I won’t let my heart beat faster is simple yet decidedly clever, and poignant for its accessible and widely relevant premise.
Meanwhile, after these long-form melodic and lyrical outpourings, the music softly yet skillfully gives the listener time to pause and themselves reflect on it all. The latter half in particular sees an ocean of welcoming, calming synths wash over, a full soundscape with multiple intricacies, yet never too overbearing to detract from the song’s central sentiments.
Brilliant, a refreshing look back through music, but also a notably unique and recognisable production style. Witz does his own thing, and it works well.
