Reverb-kissed guitar-work meets with a classic trap-style beat for this progressively melodic new hip hop anthem from artist and rapper Video 4.0.
Leading with a quickly immersive soundscape – a likeable back and forth between chords, a recognisable riff and a powerful sense of space – H8tn goes on to introduce a mellow yet versatile vocal lead, and a level of performance that elevates things with subtle confidence and swagger.
An addictively alternative yet satisfying anthem, H8tn takes a few familiar traits and blends these with plenty that feel unique to the artist. There’s a classic rap vibe to the varying flow and the details, the theatrics, but there’s also a contemporary presentation and finish to the whole thing – minus the overuse of auto-tune.
All in the sound refreshes, and the minimalism is easy to get into – live guitar, clean vocals, a certain tone and recognisable identity, plus an underlying sense of optimism and opposition to darkness and hate. The latter half in particular digs deeper still into this concept; unexpectedly so. And given the track’s pretty perfect three-minute lifespan – the whole thing hits with impact and leaves its mark with ease. Hopefully there’s more music to come.
