From her upcoming album Four In The Morning, TOULOUSE blends electronic creativity with conceptual poignancy, for the bedroom pop ambiance and alternative meanderings of Disco Fiasco.
On the surface, something of an unusual take on the floor-filler energy and colourful layering implied by its titled. Disco Fiasco builds from simple, Lana-style keys, through multiple layers of changing strings, rhythms, harmonies and effects.
All the while, the leading voice undoubtedly takes precedence, holding tightly to a deeply personal thread of contemplations, as we build towards a subtle EDM crescendo that’s hypnotic alongside.
The idea is that the Disco represents the backdrop of navigating life’s highs and lows – the non-stop stream of energy and movement that continues, even when we experience emotional catastrophe. The opening lyrics, ‘I was raised by neglect, made my memories with regret’, set that foundation clearly from the outset, and the song proceeds to explore the heartache and melancholy of this topic, whilst imparting an increasingly energising soundscape.
It’s like an artistic representation of the unstoppable rat race, the colourful celebration of the world, refusing to falter or pause or wait, even when you’re lost in the depths and darkness of personal turmoil.
Written like a dark and introspective poem, Disco Fiasco employs an alternative, almost dissonant verse melody, throughout which the quietly expressive voice and fearless vulnerability of TOULOUSE presents as easily recognisable.
“I’m chaos in a ballgown
The riot of the party
I wear my heart on my sleeve
Maybe that’s what’s wrong with me.”
