An unexpectedly addictive rock and roll anthem, a renowned cover made entirely their own – indie four-piece The Reckless build up from slick and stylish familiarity, to a fully-loaded psychedelic rock realm.
Expect gritty and impassioned vocals and absolute musical unity, as Justin Timberlake’s Sexy Back gets a whole new look, for the sub-three-minute explosion that is The Reckless’ new single.
Things start off fairly simple, great vocals and a huge sense of rhythmic oneness between the bass, guitars and drums. The set-up follows the structure of the original, the vocals are spacious and unmarked – it feels like an easy but effective cover.
Then we get to the hook, the distortion kicks in, the call and response, the sheer passion and punk-like extension of the norm. We do return to the funk just briefly, the vocals now proving distinct and captivating, but ultimately things take a turn for the all the more creative. The final quarter of this Sexy Back cover is immense.
Really nicely done, an impressive and likable take, from a band whom will no doubt put on a phenomenal live show.
