Separating the songwriting from the style gifts you the power to understand the expression – the melody, the mood, the meaning. Then we get genre, something offering a sense of difference, preference or design. We write songs from the same place, whether it’s for heavy metal, folk or classical – some kind of feeling or story, something we need to get out – but the style can then help take that story or feeling in a completely unique direction.

In this case, The Dancing Shadowz have written something beautifully melodic, emotive and thoughtful, with a hopeful groove and short lines that pave the way in a catchy fashion towards something a little more long-form expressive during the mid-section.

Then for the style, we enter a fully retro ambiance of electronic voices, hazy atmospheric layers of synths and old-school drum patterns, which take us through a unique sonic tunnel that’s increasingly clever in representing the artistic depths of the song.

Sunsets Suck is not only distinct in title, but also in subject matter – and in the manner in which The Dancing Shadowz have captured its essence artistically. The first half is a simple pleasure to let play, hopeful but contemplative, melodically calming; satisfying. Then the latter half, after this mid-section strip-down, is a fully dreamlike, ethereal wave of distant memories and moments.

It’s a gorgeous and refreshingly interesting style to choose, and this backs up the importance of the writing, the composing process – how songs can be all the more effective when the right genre or style is chosen and utilised to underline the intended theme.
