Royal She - Karma - Stereo Stickman

LA alt-pop duo Royal She deliver an explosive alternative pop track for their latest offering. Employing contrast quite masterfully, Karma pours into the room by way of its quickly catchy, snappy and nineties-esque hook – this looping statement of ‘Bitch, you gon’ get what you deserve’, backed by an acoustic guitar sound and a clap rhythm.

The track is quick to evolve though, creativity guiding as per the general artistic approach of Royal She. We get listed verses, an intensely rock-infused chorus, and even a rapped verse later on in the process. It’s an eclectic mix, to say the very least, hitting with impact thanks to the sheer juxtaposition of those intimate, lyrical verses, often with a melodic sound and a strummed acoustic guitar, and the intense weight and grit of the subsequent moments.

Vocalist Alison Freed and multi-instrumentalist Alexandria Reyes make up the unmistakable sound and image of Royal She. Having first hit the scene with their 2019 cover of Billie Eilish’ My Girl, Royal She have become known for their freestyle and fun approach to making songs that are both entertaining and confronting. Karma quite perfectly encapsulates that quality, and indeed the band’s inherent diversity as performers.

Their debut album Befores and Afters is due to arrive in 2025, but for now, the nostalgic energy and confidence of Karma acts as a scornful, memorable, and boldly energising ode to what fans can expect from the bigger project.
