Rasha Jay - High Dive - Stereo Stickman

Rasha Jay High Dive

Rasha has created some intelligent, fantastic support for her voice in this spacious production.

Instruments are stabbing their different colours at the canvas to create splashes of interest providing the backdrop to the main event, which is absolutely Rasha’s lead vocal. Raw bass parts, all string and fret noise and pumping interest are paired with picking, chugging guitar which, later, get the chance to explore new voicings as the track progresses.

The drums hold the whole together, while organ with a merciless tremolo creates and maintains the song’s pulse.

The vocal is vibrant, personal and urgent, and absolutely engages the listener with a grown-up narrative that ignores conventional arrangement – following where the story goes rather than adhering to a conventional pop arrangement. Intelligent lyrics go where you want them to, with smart rhymes that satisfy without being obvious – all told with Rasha’s serpentine vocal; sometimes clipped, sometimes soaring and sometimes relaxed enough to allow us to hear its natural and rapid vibrato. Every time we hit a familiar point in the melody it’s sung with character, intent and new parts – there’s no discernible copy-and-pasting going on here.

Perhaps most bravely of all (in today’s attention deficit culture), after a terrific climax of vocal arrangement, we’re allowed over a minute’s worth of musical exploration where the band are allowed to flex their muscles within the groove, with the aforementioned guitar exploring melody in a style not dissimilar to Floyd’s David Gilmour.
