Prince Wavey - Plain Jane - Stereo Stickman

Prince Wavey Plain Jane

-

Great production brings a distinct and dreamy backdrop to what proves a contrastingly dark and confident flow of rap bars. Prince Wavey carves out a recognisable new lane in modern hip hop, with the ambient qualities and wordplay of Plain Jane.

Stylistically unconfined, pairing a trap rhythm with ethereal synths that rain down almost euphorically, Plain Jane feels more like a world-music-inspired instrumental dance or trip-hop track from the outside. However, the song then unites this with a nostalgic and cleanly-mixed rap vocal, to effectively reground things amidst the story and sentiments of hip hop.

Prince Wavey’s voice is unmistakable, something made clear throughout his growing repertoire, and so in this atmospheric and colourful setting, it’s still that swagger and tone, that mellow pace and presence, that rings out to connect.

Noting the classic confidence of the genre and plenty of clever references and metaphors, the bars of Plain Jane feel like a fun sort of freestyle in many ways, and to pair this with the unique nature of the production, makes for a perfectly summer-ready single from Prince Wavey.
