The UK’s own Popgang unites the talents of twin brothers Rob and Pete Evans with friend and guitarist Josh Lowe, to deliver a uniquely genre-fusing, dreamy and intoxicating array of production and songwriting.
Form the EP The Futurists, Time Flies marks a fine introduction to Popgang, a retro bass-line and ethereal guitar setting the foundation for a Damon Albarn-like vocal to softly blend expressive sentiments and references with a clear sense of character and heart.
The song builds up beautifully, certain riffs hypnotically maintaining the roots of the track, whilst the instrumental set-up later gathers momentum and passion, even unexpected twists of darkness, throughout a five minute arrangement.
It’s a fascinating style, nostalgic for its extended mix – the artistry and structure breathing new life into the current indie scene, and likely reminding listeners of the mid-album tracks from around the dawn of indie rock. The song is both thoughtful and enchanting, something to let play in the backdrop, or to focus in on and connect with lyrically – whatever you need from it.
Featuring vocals, keys and bass from Rob, vocals and drums from Pete, and guitar from Josh, the rest of the album follows suit in its creative freedom and unpredictability. There’s occasionally more electronic design to the forefront, but the approach still always maintains a clear love for the process and for music in all of its forms – a quality defiantly shared by the Stroud-based four-piece.
