A heavily ambient soundscape sets the mood with ease as OpenSoul’s new collaborative release pours through. An immediate sense of fullness meets with a dash of melancholy, heart-felt wonder and uncertainty, before the crisp, raspy and intentional vocal line kicks in to guide you through the story.

Scarred Hearts at War is as poetic and reflective as you could hope for. Short lines offer insight and vague contemplation that can easily be applied to any and all struggling relationships.

Structurally these short lines pave the way well throughout this trap-style beat and dreamy, immersive ambiance. What follows is a much higher pitch, a powerful moment of heightened passion and soul, which contrasts beautifully with what came before.

The song was already enjoyable in its own simplicity during the verse, but this later section, the questioning nature of the lyric, the familiar concept of love being a losing game, it works awesomely in elevating the track way above the majority of its peers. And on top of this, the rap feature during the final quarter adds a sudden intensity and pace that’s again completely unexpected yet perfectly in keeping with the emotion and angst at the heart of the song.

A brilliant single, with superb performances from all involved.
