Ok Goodnight bring indie rock riffs and countering vocals of delicate, melodic and soulful meanderings together. 22 is an anthem, but also a whisper, an embrace – and it’s all at once catchy and brilliantly original.
The style of 22 is timeless, but the songwriting is something new – every phrase unusual and interesting. The video is equally captivating, and the use of contrast – moments of gentle riff-work juxtaposed by those of explosive rock anthemic euphoria.
The structure is fantastic, the band alternative and engaging but also clearly aware of what works and what captures an audience’s attention. We get a love song in a way, a resolving ‘you’ll always matter to me’ woven into an otherwise complex portrayal of introspective addressing.
The spider, the web, the build up, the choreography, the drum playing – Ok Goodnight are great then sensational with this release, and the latter half is unmissable as the song evolves and ultimately peaks; noting a kind of hard rock crescendo at the finish that’s no doubt phenomenal in the live setting.
