Fresh from the album No Filter, I Make It Rain In The Desert introduces an alternative approach to hip hop – a creative and spacious backdrop accompanies a hook that consistently reinforces the central idea. There’s a slightly haunting but easy to vibe to energy about the musical backdrop and the rhythm of that hook section, which in itself feels like the bulk of the track at first, but soon enough the verse sections seek to blow your mind with lyrical quickness and quirky wordplay.
While you’re likely to find yourself impressed by the vocal delivery on this track, the song itself is one that inescapably weaves its way into your consciousness in a pretty unforgettable manner. It’s not easy to do that these days when so much new hip hop hits the airwaves every hour, but OffKilter have found a way – and this is done without excessive levels of volume or unnecessary drops.
The track is minimalist for the most part, standing tall on the strength of its own unique concept and confidence. That second word is something that drives the energy of this whole project – the further you get into the playlist, the faster and more intensely these lyrics pour through. So much so that a single listen or even two is far from enough to catch every idea. Unfuckwitable is a mighty example of this, a track that blows you away with it’s rap delivery and the sheer volume of words among such a calming, spacious backdrop.
OffKilter have managed to find that balance between the sound of the moment – this ever popular and energetic approach to hip hop – and something unquestionably unique. Their sound is refreshingly original, notably simplistic from a musical perspective, but impressive in its arrangement of language. Highly likely to make waves at a live show.
