Mutton Xops - November '63 - Stereo Stickman

Mutton Xops November ’63

-

Classic indie rhythms and psychedelic wah peddles make up the instantly nostalgic embrace of the compelling rock single from NYC artist Mutton Xops.

Featuring accessible vocals of increasing passion and volume, November ’63 stands tall initially on the weight of its set-up, and later on the even greater weight of its underlying subject matter.

“We are engaged…” resounds from the outset, involving the audience in this talk of ‘we’, of the brave, the living and the dead. As things progress, however, the factual undertones connect more intensely with the individual listener, a sense of pride and honour elevating the increasing emotion of the delivery.

Rather than taking a more commonly approached contemporary political stance, the historical aspect works largely in the song’s favor. The infamous events of November ’63 still reappear throughout literature, film and conversation, and the way Mutton Xops has framed the whole discussion adds a little more nuance to proceedings.

And when all is said and done, there’s character in the performance, style to the arrangement, and the sheer escapism of independent rock illuminated throughout every layer and trait. Well worth a listen.
