Artist and rapper Motiv impresses with organic musicality and creative freedom alike on this latest release.
Stylishly uniting the simplicity of a guitar-style riff with contemporary pop and trap inspired production and rhythm, Don’t Test Me tips its hat to the likes of nineties RnB with its immediately infectious hook. Elsewhere, Motiv injects a unique fusion of rap and melody for the verses and the story-telling, and keeps things personal yet vague enough to be made your own lyrically.
As the pace picks up, the intensity rises, the vocal becomes quicker and more striking, moving from smooth and melodic to fast-paced and loaded with angst and self-confidence. This progression makes fine use of contrast, the softer moments with the hook and the riff connecting for their purity and the addictive nature of the tune, the heavier verse moments hitting with impact for their weight and grit alongside of this.
A likeable new track, bringing together the sounds of a simpler time with those undoubtedly rooted in the creative freedom of 2020.
