Having first hit our radar back in 2020, Mitchell Zia takes on a whole new persona and style with the supervillain EP, leading with deep and characterful vocals, through a series of theatrical indie arrangements that tell stories and entertain in a boldly distinct way.
Guide is the opening track and encapsulates these qualities, an eclectic production that naturally compliments the meandering and versatile vocal style and lyrical originality of Mitchell Zia.
Then we move into the aptly-titled accelerating, a heavy bass-and-beat combo supporting sultry, nearly whispered vocals, and a touch of something fusing disco and funk throughout this again eclectic production. The song is poetically mysterious, but appears to be another original ode to romance and unity. The style varies, the leading character remains compelling and gripping performatively, and the project is well on its way to achieving an unmistakable sound.
haunt me follows and offers perhaps the most mainstream and satisfying alt-pop track of the EP. A heavy dance set-up and smooth, concise vocals carve out a catchy and immersive ode to the alternative themes intertwined throughout supervillain.
Then to wrap things up, Mitchell switches gears one last time, presenting a brighter vocal initially, and a structurally powerful progression, in the form of the EP’s imagery-loaded and mighty title-track.
supervillain the song is catchy and quirky, with a strong stomp of a groove, and melodically offers an unexpected twist of something Katy Perry-like at its melodic peak. Then we get these intimate and nearly whispered breakdown sections, the voice and production again showcasing a perfect connection to one another.
