Easy-going, organic rock and hopeful songwriting make up the aptly-titled new album from London songwriter and artist Mike Melan. The multi-instrumentalist presents a diverse and energetic collection of pop-rock songs, many of which contrast the weight of rock with the delicacy of contemplation and poetic wonder.
Following on from the debut project Soul Theory, the new collection develops a pop-rock sound blending distortion and melodic optimism – qualities that ring loud from the opening All I Have Is Tears. The overall output is a good-vibes commitment to the cause, a relatable guy-next-door kind of vocal lead, with subtle harmonies and the sound of the drums, bass and guitar furthering that accessible realness.
Twelve tracks in full and musically versatile but with songwriting and vocals clearly united under the Mike Melan style, We Still Have Hearts proves a deeply thoughtful, reflective and inspired collection of originals. Early highlights include the poetic and rather anthemic Walls, the colourful call and response of Together Again, and the simple yet poignant Different Times. We even switch to a pop-punk rhythm and tone for Ignite!, and a soaring electric solo lights up the country-kissed likes of Wherever Midnight Runs.
In every case, each song feels like its own rather epic exploration of thought and feeling. The songs all have a raw yet timeless arrangement and sentiment combination, and Melan showcases that quality with eclecticism and heart throughout.
