This one hits with a completely unexpected wave of emotive depth and creativity. Marko Vintage captures both the sound of the moment, and that of an individually driven artist – with a unique story to tell, a poetic and personal way of telling it, and a notably versatile approach to production.
Ultimately an emo-rap and trap single, nevergoingbacktohowitwas takes its time to establish that genre trait. What we’re gifted in the beginning is a contemporary vocal mix of long-form, melodic outpourings – personal reflections both heartbroken and honest, with a touch of Post Malone to the tremble and passionate peaks.
It’s an atmospheric introduction, and soon enough things switch gears for a classic soul vocal lead or fragment of yesteryear’s music era.
The entire first minute is backed by only this ambient bass depth and rising anticipation – a somewhat brave yet essentially effective quality, which paves the way well for the central rap anthem that connects the intro and ending in a uniquely high-octane fashion.
An impressive style, in keeping with the scene but also refreshingly original. It will be interesting to hear where else the music takes Marko Vintage in the coming months.
