Poetic contemplations, seamlessly intertwining modern production tools and traditional acoustic folk music – KAI delivers an intimate reflection on how each human experience is ultimately shaped by chance, with Another Life.
Beautifully thoughtful and catchy, a scarily organic take on the so far strictly human format, Another Life is a storytelling folk song with a simple acoustic guitar backing up a breathy and distinct vocal lead. The concept is that we could have been anyone on this journey – that identity is ever-changing and forever connected, and therefore that empathy emerges from recognise ourselves in other people.
We proceed through lyrics both vague and personal, metaphors and images that meander between anecdotal and relatable. ‘We’re candles flickering in the same flame’ feels both beautiful and somewhat dissonant as a reference, capturing further attention as the song inevitably brightens and uplifts.
The chorus is a huge strong point, ‘I am you and you are me’ resounds and threads things together divinely, the latter half noting the shared consciousness and space between all of us. It’s a poignant and powerful listen, sometimes provocative, sometimes uncertain in its sense of clarity, always focused on this sense of possibility and warmth that is the melody and passion of the arrangement.
The song builds up for its final third, the production adding layers of energy, piano and synth, the guitar intensifying, as we approach the final crescendo and chorus that naturally seals the deal.
