Fusing a retro synth melody with a light click of a drum-loop, the track leaves plenty of room for the artist to rock the mic, which she does with unwavering conviction – rhythmically blending elements of hip hop with a somewhat anthemic, near-melodic kind of outpouring.
The flow is impressive, perhaps the track’s greatest strength. In particular, the final part of the second verse sees things speed up and culminate in this moment of audio symmetry, rounding the whole thing off well.
Then you get the colourful optimism and these layers of vocal expression, adding further character – all of which helps make this a quickly recognisable hit; with traces of recent big names from hip hop but still plenty of its own intention and swagger.
