Fascinating production and vocal intrigue lay down a strong foundation, as Horror Movies in the Morning joins forces with Polo Frost, for the hip hop to hard-rock fusion Die In Vain.
Starting off on an ambient, atmospheric high, Die In Vain blends underwater production and haunting tones with a softly-spoken series of conscious bars. The track sets the mood and captivates from the outset, adding in subtle shifts in bass and pace respectively as the whole thing rolls along.
The collaboration sees the track completely change gears for the middle third. Suddenly we’re in a dark rock to metal realm of distortion and melody, which helps add dynamic and contrast to an otherwise simple but rather hypnotic progression.
The hook is admittedly dissonant, taking things towards the likes of Nine Inch Nails – which suits the darker production throughout the track. It takes a little getting used to, the creative blending and the awkward melodic stylings that turn distinctly towards grunge. But it’s all in line with the artistic freedom of the style – an unexpected meeting between traits and genres that ultimately results in an unsettling and intense ode to the conceptual ideas that inspired it.
That’s what we get here – a thoughtful outpouring of self-reflection and longing, both relatable and deeply personal in equal parts. The closing moments are defiantly more heavy and bold than the opening ones, production-wise, and this eclecticism is a huge part of the style.
