A brilliantly impressive debut from electronic outfit FRNDS AS CMPNY. Initially putting me in mind of the likes of M83, an eighties aura soon emerges, blending warm synths with an overall comforting audio wash that softens every edge yet embraces the listener in an energizing, uplifting fashion.
The somewhat mellow, Depeche Mood verses lead the way with strong anticipation for the hook – particularly once you’ve heard it for the first time. Loops of single note riffs intertwine and collaborate in a perfectly precise yet busy manner – offering the escapism of dance, amidst the engaging melodic progression and chord-work of classic pop.
Then of course there’s the underlying story – the lyrics, the concept. The hook keeps things simple, resounding and repeating that title, adding to the addictive, easy hit of this moment as hinted at by the musical build up.
Rhythm is crucial in a song like this, and every lyric and riff and throbbing synth-line works in unison with the very heartbeat of the song. Even the pauses, moments of complete silence, add superb levels of suspense, followed by an awesomely satisfying, bizarrely simple drop back to the comfort and swaying energy of that hook.
Great songwriting, familiar yet fresh, and really strong production. The sound works beautifully at high volumes – an ultimate recommend if you really want to lose yourself and experience this in full. I look forward to hearing more.
