Rising UK three-piece Feral Family continue to blend work ethic and passion through consistency and great songwriting. Their latest single Brutalizer tops off a growing repertoire and further secures their status as one of both media and streaming’s most exciting new bands.
Blending style and substance to compelling degrees, Brutalizer is Feral Family’s creative take on the topic of drowning amidst emotional overwhelm. The feeling presented and explored is that of struggling to keep your head above water when life gets heavy and chaotic, as it increasingly does these days, and both the lyrics and music – not to mention the band’s honest delivery – really capture the essence of that experience.
Featuring a thick and hazy bassline and guitar combination, alongside garage-style drums and indie vocals both evocative and relatable, Feral Family reside stylistically between the likes of Muse and Hard-Fi,
The song rolls along with a certain immersive melancholy at first, before exploding into a harder psychedelic peak for its chorus, and this transition and contrast is powerful. The change is all-consuming, effectively depicting the true crescendo of the feeling, the repeating outcry of ‘all I want’ and the sonic rock arrangement enveloping the listener, as frontman Jamie Lowe performatively shifts from tired to passionately exhausted.
Stunning lyrics and a certain intricate blend of alternative and mainstream appeal lets Brutalizer provide something of an addictive hit of escapism this season. The band move from strength to strength without a doubt, but there’s something truly captivating, relatably claustrophobic, uncertain and yet calming, about this poignant display of introspective suffocation.
