Representing everything that made rock and roll so impactful, timeless, and popular – DownTown Mystic continue their quest as one of the the genre’s hardest working ensembles, with the launch of yet another EP.
Mystic Highway Road Trip compiles six original songs, and features a tightly woven group of talented musicians, to promise a playlist of hopeful, uplifting rock and roll tracks to help ignite a wave of positivity in a tumultuous year.
Our journey begins with Superstar – To Sir Elton with Love – indie rock guitar licks and sixties vocal waves quickly set the scene, and the bounce and sung style of the track aptly pays tribute to Sir Elton himself in both set-up and substance.
After this, Live is an absolute jam, an instantly likable groove, with snappy vocals and slick guitars all carving out a classic rock anthem that gets the shoulders swaying and the voice singing, with vibrant thoughts of all the things that make life beautiful.
Then for Losing My Mind, we switch to a lush soulful performance and a softer, Eagles-like recording, with a crisp acoustic sound driven higher by fast-fingered base and live drums. As ever, the lyrics relate with humanity and heart, and the melody is simple and enjoyable to follow along.
Shadow Walk is a personal highlight, a suddenly mellow, ambient poem of sorts, the guitar tones and atmospheric, thoughtful waves of sound feeling beautifully poignant at this point in the album, and the soulful, passionately returning peaks of ‘Do you know my name’ building further on the grip and charm of the performance.
Fly – Buddy Holly Mix takes things through the doorway of a slightly different aura, adding a reflective moment and further nostalgia with the mix, the distant vocals, the aspirations and desire to escape. It’s a valuable moment, and it helps thread these six tracks together quite beautifully, leading well into the funky keys and honky-tonk soul-rock essence of the closing song Somebody’s Always Doing Something 2 Somebody.
This track is an iconic hit from DownTown Mystic, a recent single for which the title instantly puts that catchy hook in your mind – a lasting earworm of the sort that manages to stand the test of time, and it’s a rare quality. Huge rock and roll vibes and a fitting, contemplative anthem to wrap up this road trip EP from the rather legendary DownTown Mystic.
