DJ Mizzy’s Prost is a blessing to play at volume, the sheer precision with which he has balanced intensity, creativity, and professionalism, is brilliant. The track is unlike any of the EDM-inspired releases of late because it veers off in its own direction almost entirely. Certain moments feel like blissfully ambient waves of warmth, others feel soaked in anticipation prior to some heavy drop, others feel industrially rhythmic, others vintage, others dark and hypnotic, and some simply take the form of what feels like your own heartbeat pounding and driving with the energy of the piece.
The beat that this track evolves to utilise is totally unique. On top of everything, this tripped up, creatively free and intense – almost alternative military style – rhythm, drives the latter half of the experience in a manner that’s impossible to ignore. Before this, the constant sense of change, the consistent movement and variation in the mood of the track, comes through almost as if this is a collection of remixes, or even a full string of scenes in some short film.
It’s not the sort of set-up that would usually prove effective for the average producer, but in the case of DJ Mizzy, that professionalism showcases a notable awareness of what works – an understanding of the audience, their importance within the process. Every step captivates here, to the point that the second time you listen, you expect these developments – you look forward to the calm after the chaos, and vice-versa.
After years and years of mainstream, systematic songwriting – verse-chorus-verse-chorus – we tend to turn our backs on anything that creates its own pathways. In this case, it’s easy to get lost in the drama and detail of the track. Those unusual traits become quickly familiar and enjoyable as the music pours through. I’m interested to see what else DJ Mizzy offers up in the near future.
