From the 2024 album Who We Are, US folk duo Dan & Faith tell the story of a transgender boy taking on the modern world, through the acoustic warmth and lyrical longing of My Name Is George.
Reflecting on the nature of transition and wishing to be known as someone new, My Name Is George takes the traditional folk format of intimate, unedited musicianship, and a catchy, uncomplex melody, and proceeds to weave in a deeply honest and vulnerable take on the feelings experienced by a young trans boy.
It’s a hopeful sound, an intimate and non-confronting organic arrangement, and the lyrics are simple but striking in their addressing of the subject matter – namely this powerful sense of hope that George experiences in considering his future opportunities.
Later on, we switch to Dan’s leading voice, and the character changes accordingly – we enter a realm of acceptance, of love and possibility, to wrap up the complex but commonly detailed essence of the story.
