Chillz Muzik & GreenLab The Connection (Feat. Mr.XO)

-

This is a totally impressive and easy to get into project from Chillz Muzik and GreenLab united. The single The Connection introduces the sound superbly – the feature from Mr.XO fits the mood and movement of it all beautifully, and the rest of the EP Connected is more than worth the time it takes to experience it.

The Connection offers up a classic and somewhat vintage hip hop vibe that isn’t often utilised in modern approaches to the genre. The aura is upbeat, hopeful, contrasting thickness with lightness – fusing the electronic world with that which is much more organic. From the offset, the soundscape is delicate and cleverly built – the initial space, the distant spoken word – then the beat smashes onto the scene, accompanied by an immensely rhythmic and captivating leading voice. The flow is on point, seeming like another instrument; a fully connected piece of the puzzle. Perhaps more importantly though, if the good energy and smooth beat isn’t enough, the lyrics offer up a string of optimistic and inspiring ideas. The track breathes positivity into your day. Everyone involved works towards this same goal, and it makes for something completely refreshing and massively addictive to listen to.

Production wise the music holds so much power in supporting and enhancing the underlying concepts. The sound is a little retro, for sure – it brings with it an element of nostalgia. At the same time though, your studio monitors or headphones will let you embrace it all without an ounce of low quality – everything is beautifully bass-driven on the one side, and gorgeously crisp on the other. You find yourself surrounded by this entirely – GreenLab has created the perfect arena within which to experience and consider the ideas presented throughout.

Elsewhere on this collaborative EP there’s a fair level of eclecticism to keep things fresh and interesting. The music varies creatively, though the sheer skill and confidence of the set-up and of the lyrical performances never ceases to impress. Infinity Vibes kicks things off with style – high energy, melody and a definite touch of modern life. It feels almost like an EDM crossover track. Future Self mixes things up further, changing the pace, the stylistics. The beat is thick here, mellow yet intense – as the energy rises, so does the sense of drama and weight. The hook is amazing, simple and effective, making certain the key line stays with you – something again set to inspire and motivate for the better.

The three tracks alone showcase more than enough to make you pretty certain there’s a hell of a lot to look forward to from all involved. The Connection is the perfect place to start though, a powerful song with both swagger and subtlety intertwining to give off a generally hypnotic and mighty vibe. The alternating verses make for a totally entrancing few minutes of performance and lyricism that really leaves its mark. It’s easy (and enjoyable) to listen more than a few times, just to make sure you catch it all. Not enough artists in hip hop are pushing to make these kind of waves anymore, so this is a joy to discover. A really well crafted and thoughtful project, plus – simply put – great music. The Connection is huge.
