Simple yet satisfying, organic and authentic indie rock – a twist of punk or alt-folk energy to its relatable vocals, along with original and impressively gripping lyrics. Chelekis humbly redirect the sound of modern rock, with a genuine live-band sound and brilliantly likable songwriting, for Problematic.
Jag, Griffin, Luke and Parker make up Chelekis, a four-piece with a shared passion for the process, and that inherent connection that shines brilliantly through the rhythmic unity and celebratory scorn of Problematic.
The song is snappy, catchy and simple – short lines and a resounding conceptual sense of escaping from difficulty – all of which is quick to connect. Meanwhile, the guitar sound is heavily distorted, yet something like dreamy keys and gentle voices works to counter that.
The resulting sound has the feel of an alt-folk festival anthem, in many ways, a good old knees-up alternative to the mainstream, and this lets the Chelekis sound effectively carve out its own unique lane.
All the while, the track is incredibly memorable – an earworm in both the instrumental and the vocal, and the former of these is refreshingly gifted plenty of time to work its magic alone. The final third in particular highlights the band’s instrumental prowess, before we return to one last looping all-together-now, to bring things to an impactful crescendo.
