Cavane - Evil Until - Stereo Stickman

Cavane Evil Until

-

Beautifully countering the echo of reverb-kissed vocals, with the sheer intensity of heavy basslines, beats and distorted electric guitars, Mexico City trio Cavane achieve an intoxicating blend of indie and hard rock, with the conceptual deep-dive that is Evil Until.

Featuring the combined talents of Alexis Soubran, Irving Soubran, and Alejandro Escarcega, Cavane offers seductive and stylish verse sections for this song, a distant story capturing a kind of Arctic Monkeys level of character and intention, but the soundscape is entirely its own, and the switch to the chorus is something else yet again.

Soaring electronic layers of synths and effects help elevate and amplify the organic rock sound the band have poured into this release. Evil Until depicts a live act who clearly let a passion for the process guide engaging performances. At the same time, the songwriting is its own kind of beast – provocative stories and scenes, feelings and reflections, both poetic and piercing, help line the walls of a song that consistently builds towards a stunning crescendo of darkness and meaning.

As songwriters, Cavane look to exploring topics of memory, loss, desire, identity, and contradiction. These all seem to be carefully woven into the fabric of Evil Until, not least of all the sense of contradiction or contrast, between delicacy and weight; between character traits and moments.

The song has a dark tension to its core, and the delivery is unfiltered and free in its relaying of these ideas. We consider the darkness that resides in everyone, the selfishness, the fear or destructive impulses that could at any moment derail a good life. The lyrics visualise an encounter with something destrucive, and provoke thoughts of recognizing who you truly are, perhaps even accepting it – the darkness and all.

The result is a strangely hypnotic sense of appreciation for life, for the fluidity of it, the complexity, the possibility, and both the music and story powerfully represent this shift in mindset as we reach the end of the arrangement, and this intriguing sense of acceptance and optimism.
