Uniquely poetic rap bars lay down a plethora of images and metaphors in unison with clearly personal revelations – meanwhile the music makes and breaks its own rules, for Casual Water’s Fuel.
Freshly released from the 2023 album Odyssey, Fuel introduces the conscious bars and ambient yet intriguing sound-design of Casual Water with equal parts smooth vibes and conceptual depth.
Somewhat atmospheric and otherwise retro funk and pop-rock for its warped guitars and panning vocal quality, Fuel rises up to explosively distorted dance realms during the mid-section – our protagonist switching up the flow more than a few times along the way.
The whole thing proves a vastly artistic representation of its underlying themes, and this continues throughout haunting instrumental moments of vocal melody and again interesting panning from all angles.
Alongside the unusual production, Casual Water delivers a profoundly thoughtful set of lyrics – akin to the indie gems from Grieves and other Hip Hop legends creating just beneath the mainstream radar.
It’s a release that takes more than a single listen to connect with, and perhaps hits with greater impact still as part of the completed 8-track collection, but it’s one that’s well worth the journey.
Original to its core, contemplative and smart, unpredictable – Fuel ticks a lot of boxes in terms of the modern Rap universe.
