Blind Lucy - Elephant - Stereo Stickman

Blind Lucy Elephant

-

Oh boy, oh boy, oh boy, I do love me a slapped bass! The hard-rocking Elephant happens to be pretty darned funky as well as rock solid. The rhythm section gets a great chance to flex in this brilliantly arranged and mixed little taste explosion. It wouldn’t surprise me if the kick head needed replacing after this recording session…

Meaty guitars are riffing hard, and a throaty bass gets a solo spot and some lovely sonic treatment to add colour, character and depth. All the while some wonderfully melodic vocals poke their heads through the blanket of sound, even when there’s the audio equivalent of an air-raid going on at the song’s halfway point.

‘This room’s not big enough for the two of us…’ goes the lyric and I’m not quite sure my headphones are big enough for some of the moments that Blind Lucy are nailing down here.

This band understands dynamics and how to keep a song fresh – and what a rollercoaster Elephant is! Funk, prog, rock, pop – so many sensibilities are catered for here, the description of it alone might make it sound over-egged, but the reality is that the listening experience is something of a free-wheeling one. However, there are enough catchy reference points (like the melody of the lyric quoted above) to keep you listening.

Highly accomplished, beautifully captured and thoroughly recommended.
